Ordnance Survey AddressBase data is the primary source for all address data in Great Britain. AddressBase Core is the newest addition to the AddressBase suite of products, and is updated weekly, simple to use and contains over 33 million properties each with a pre-built a single line address. Esri UK is a partner and reseller of Ordnance Survey, therefore we can provide AddressBase Core data in ESRI format ready for use in ArcGIS.
‘Should we be migrating to AddressBase Core?’ This is a common question for those customer using the AddressBase Suite. This blog discusses some of the motivations behind customers migrating to AddressBase Core that can help produce more successful outcomes in customer journeys.
What does Esri UK offer?
Esri UK Data Services provide AddressBase Core for full Great Britain coverage weekly in .csv format or monthly in a File Geodatabase format ready to use in ArcGIS. AddressBase Core can be provided just for your Area of Interest in both File Geodatabase format or .csv.
Esri UK also provides an AddressBase Core locator, which can be used as a gazetteer within ArcGIS Pro, to allow you to geocode your data accurately to address level. The locator uses AddressBase core data to perform geocoding against address lists, matching each address to the equivalent AddressBase Core record. Other attribution information about each address can also be added to the address records, such as property level coordinates and secondary level classifications.
Why Migrate to AddressBase Core?
Cost and availability: AddressBase Core is free to use if your organisation is covered by the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA)and is available commercially to non-public sector customers as the rest of the AddressBase Suite is. All public sector organisations should use AddressBase Core for accessing address data rather than paying for other third party products.
Accuracy: AddressBase Core contains accurate data primarily sourced from Local Authorities who have legal responsibility to capture and maintain address data for Great Britain. AddressBase Core lets organisations easily identify any property with a UPRN in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) and locate it on a map with precision. The property has to exist, and not have been demolished or be yet to be built.
Frequent updates: AddressBase Core is released weekly, keeping you more up to date with change. The core underlying data is updated constantly, many times a day. Ordnance Survey collects, quality checks and publishes a new version of the whole data set of AddressBase Core every week.
Data Sharing: AddressBase Core has the UPRN as the key identifier allowing property/address systems to share information without the need for multiple matching processes. This allows users to easily cross-reference between different data sets and reduces errors in data exchange between multiple organisations and communication. Every addressable location in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales and excluding Northern Ireland) has a UPRN, and using this standard can save money, time, resources and lives.
Scalability: If your work involves finding addresses outside Great Britain, such as Northern Ireland, you can use AddressBase Islands to supplement AddressBase Core’s data.
